Charlize Theron stars as Mavis Gary, a 30-something teen fiction writer and divorcee who, with obedient Pomeranian in tow, embarks on a quest to steal back her high school sweetheart Buddy. Undeterred by his happy marriage and brand new baby, Mavis returns to her small-town home in Minnesota to a warm reception from big-hearted Buddy, but a dubious reception from just about everyone else.
Alongside Theron’s brilliantly and convincingly twisted portrayal of Mavis, Patton Oswalt gives a stellar performance Matt Freehauf, a contemporary of Mavis’ with very different and darker memories from high school.
