Spoons, pencils and typewriters all featured in Mary Katrantzou’s graphic designs for autumn/winter 2012, which turned everyday objects into exciting prints.
Moving on from her signature florals, Mary’s focus was on household objects with an industrial feel, echoed in the architectural structure of some of the garments. But the bowl dresses that feature heavily in her capsule collection for Topshop were nowhere to be seen, replaced by a selection of softer, free-flowing shapes, from lightweight pant suits to chiffon layered dresses.
But as always with Katrantzou’s collections the focus was on the rich, opulent prints. Last season it was bright florals worthy of a pair of sunglasses, but this season everything was a bit more ‘real life’, with telephone buttons, luggage tassels, coat hangers and garden mazes adorning pieces. Even though the objects may not be the most exciting, Mary used her design talent to turn them into a sartorial dream.
