Publisher Mixmag has bought The Face and Kerrang! magazines from Bauer Media and has plans to re-launch The Face, which closed in 2004, as a digital publication.
The Face was launched in 1980 and ran for 14 years, before the rise of the internet and decreased sales in print magazines forced it to shut down.
The magazine was a cult favourite in its heyday, with cover stars including Kurt Cobain, Naomi Campbell, Grace Jones, Madonna, Beyoncé, and many other famous faces from the worlds of fashion and music. The Face is also credited with launching Kate Moss’s career after she was featured on the cover of the magazine aged 15.
Previous issues of the magazine are included in the permanent collection of the London Design Museum.
Full plans for the magazine haven’t yet been announced but it’s thought it will launch first as a digital format, with the possibility of the print magazine going back into publication at a later date.
Mixmag owner, Jerry Perkins, said about the acquisition of both magazines: “In a post-Vice world, we believe there are exciting opportunities for these iconic and market-defining media brands to offer commercial partners specialist advice, inside knowledge, access to talent and the story-telling skills to help them create influential content. We’re really excited by the potential to create a media powerhouse based on passionate tribes leading counter culture.”
