Canadian activewear label lululemon athletica opened its first store in the UK on Friday, located on Covent Garden’s Long Acre.
Perfect if you are in the market for a new gym or yoga kit, this Vancouver-based brand launched in 1998 and designs each piece to withstand five years of wear and tear.
Discussing the aesthetic of the store, the brand’s CAD designer Emma Grant said, “we wanted to make it a little bit more edgy than what we do in North America and give it a bit of a Northwest-meets-London feel. If you look at the details, there are a lot of burnt and individually blocked pieces of wood.”
As well as a particular focus on the Douglas fir, an evergreen tree prevalent in British Columbia, the brand also took inspiration from Covent Garden’s illustrious history. “Our inspiration really stems from the history of Covent Garden itself – it being a fruit and flower market in the 1800’s,” continued Grant. “If you look, it has beautiful iron work and architecture, and we thought, how can we apply this to our store?”
“There’s a custom yoga mat box, made out of steel boxes to mimic the architecture of the original fruit crates – when the mats are rolled up, they look like fruit in the crates. Our water feature is a little bit cheeky, with a beer tap pull for water and tiles inspired by green Victorian pub tiles,” she continued.
