Colour consulting company Pantone Color Institute has named 18-3838 Ultra Violet as colour of the year 2018
Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute said about the choice: “We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level. From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”
The Pantone colour of the year is announced annually in December and influences trends in fashion, interiors, beauty, and graphic design. Previous colours have included “Greenery” in 2017, “Rose Quartz” and “Serenity” in 2016, and “Marsala” in 2015.
Purple is a colour often associated with counterculture, individuality, and experimentation, along with mindfulness, meditation, and mysticism. It’s been linked with music icons David Bowie, Prince, and Jimi Hendrix.
Pantone suggests that Ultra Violet can be used on the catwalk and in street fashion as a “theatrical linkage” for both men’s and women’s styles that lends itself to unique colour combinations and can be paired with all colours on the spectrum.
The shade has already been spotted in catwalk shows for Calvin Klein, Gucci, and Carolina Herrera.
