Skincare Routines: Not Just for Women

When it comes to guys and their skin, many take a reactive approach. For instance, a teen may notice some blemishes and be more careful about washing his face for a while. Or a man may see some wrinkles around his eyes and ask his spouse if he can borrow her moisturiser for a few nights.
But here’s the thing: if guys took a more proactive approach to their skin care, they might not see these issues in the first place. This is why men need to learn to take care of their body’s largest organ every day—not just when a pimple pops up or a sunburn sizzles.

As for what a decent skincare routine looks like for dudes, consider the following suggestions:

Wash Morning and Night

You may already wash your face in the shower each morning and that’s great. But to up the skincare ante a bit, spring for a facial cleanser made for men’s tougher and thicker skin and then repeat the washing process at night. This will remove oil and sweat and prevent it from getting onto your pillowcase and then back on your skin. For men with sensitive skin, apply the face wash with your fingertips and avoid the urge to scrub.

Add Some Hydration

Every time you wash your face you should follow up with a moisturiser. For men like the one who wanted to borrow his wife’s anti-wrinkle cream, here’s a tip. Buy your own! Who says skincare is only for women? A quality anti-aging cream may help ward off fine lines, crow’s feet, bags under the eyes, loss of firmness and sagging. The right product should lift and hydrate your skin while visibly improving these common issues.

Pamper with a Homemade Face Pack

Guys need and deserve some pampering too. One great way to do this is with a homemade face pack using ingredients that are easy to find at the store (or in your cupboard). In addition to doing away with blackheads, oily skin and toxins, spending 15 minutes relaxing and watching Netflix while waiting for the mask to dry is a welcome break. A homemade coffee mask can help reduce redness and puffiness while helping to boost circulation so that those pesky dark circles under the eyes are not as visible. Simply whisk one egg white with 1/2 cup of coffee grounds, add one tablespoon of honey and one teaspoon of lemon juice, and blend it all into a grainy paste. Massage the mixture onto the face, let it sit for 15 minutes and then wash it off.

Keep Ageing to a Minimum

Another important step in a man’s skincare routine has to do with applying sunscreen every single day; this in turn can help prevent skin ageing. Use one with a higher SPF and remember to wear it all of the time, not merely on hot summer days when out at the park with the kids or walking the dog. Sunscreens come in different formulations, so you have the option of a spray, a stick or a moisturiser. When deciding which one is best, the answer is whichever one you’ll actually use.

A Guy’s Skin Will Thank Him

Fortunately, a guy’s skincare routine does not have to be a long and drawn-out process that takes up a lot of time and money. This is actually true for women as well; with some good and regular cleaning, moisturising, sunscreen and a fun mask now and then, anyone’s skin can glow.
