4 Tips for Recovering from Lockdown Skin

No matter what your experience of lockdown has been, it’s likely to have made you think more about your skincare regime. After all, there’s nothing like hours on Zoom or FaceTime with friends and colleagues to focus the mind when it comes to our complexions. Maybe the enforced stop to burning the candle at both ends has made you realise the importance of rest and sleep, or maybe you want your “new normal” to include a more effective, targeted and mindful beauty regime.

Here we’ve compiled a few tips to help guide your renewed focus on your skin as we tentatively return to life as we knew it. If anti-aging products are something that you particularly want to discover, visit Clarins’ dedicated page to find out more.

1. Re-Look at Your Diet

Skincare starts from within. If you’ve not had the time or emotional energy to keep up a nourishing and balanced diet over the past three months, it’s likely that your skin isn’t looking its best. The good news that with time and care you can turn things around.

As you return to elements of your pre-lockdown lifestyle, try to avoid sugar and processed foods as much as you can, and make sure you’re eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Swapping out your favourite sugary snacks for something just as filling like nuts or nut butters can help when you reach that mid-afternoon slump.

As we all know, water intake is very important. If your skin isn’t hydrated from inside, the best moisturiser in the world won’t fix it. Be mindful of the number of alcoholic and caffeinated drinks you’re consuming too.

2. De-stress and Get Plenty of Sleep

Our skin is often the most visible sign that we’re under stress. Of course, most of us are feeling more stressed than usual at the moment, whether we’re homeschooling our children or missing friends and family. But that doesn’t mean that stressed out skin is inevitable.

Start by sticking to regular sleeping and waking times whenever possible. Getting enough sleep will not only help to improve your skin, but can work wonders for your mood too.

Mindfulness and meditation techniques done at intervals throughout the day can also help to reduce stress levels. Download an app like Headspace if you’re not sure how to get started.

3. Reconsider Your Facial Products

If you’ve been using the same products on your face for years, it might be time to make a change.

Our skin changes as we age and it’s important to adjust the products you use and your routine to ensure it’s working as hard for you as it can. It can be beneficial to start using a separate day and night cream as you reach your 30s, if this is something you’ve not tried before.

Clarins has a complete collection of anti-aging and wrinkle treatments suitable for women of all ages. Whether you’re in your 30s and starting to think about anti-aging products, or you’re in your 60s and beyond, there’s a day and night cream from the range specifically designed for your skin type.

4. Exercise Outdoors

It’s important for our skin and overall health to get vitamin D. Many people in the UK are deficient in this vitamin because we (usually) get so few sunny days. You’re particularly at risk if you spend a lot of time indoors.

So make sure you get outside at least once a day and combine this with your daily exercise. Just like eating a healthy diet, regular exercise is vital for general health and glowing skin.

However, protecting your skin from sun damage is also important at this time of year. Try to avoid going out at midday when the sun is at its strongest and wear sunscreen or a moisturiser with full-spectrum SPF protection.
