David Beckham to be Elle Magazine’s first male cover star

UK Elle magazine are making London born footballer David Beckham their first ever solo male cover star.

Beckham, who’s fashion designer wife Victoria has regularly featured on the front of the glossy, will appear on the cover for Elle’s July issue, which is said to be a nod to the London 2012 Olympics and all things sporty. The issue goes on sale on May 30th.

Elle UK Editor-in-Chief Lorraine Candy, said: “David Beckham is a national hero, so we saw an opportunity to shoot a celebratory cover to support an historical and patriotic year. He is an icon and ELLE is known for featuring icons on its cover. This is a first for us on the news stand and I believe he is loved by men and women alike. Anyway, who doesn’t want to see a picture of one of the world’s most handsome men on the front cover of a magazine? It will be a collector’s issue.”

Whilst women’s magazines continue to feature female cover stars and many men’s magazines do the same, it’s nice to see Elle challenging the gender messages that magazines send.

What do you think? Is this a step in the right direction?
