Prime Minister, Theresa May, has been photographed for American Vogue Magazine, alongside an interview where she spoke about her work and personal life.
The photoshoot by Annie Leibovitz was organised by editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, and took place earlier this year during a stay at Chequers.
The PM is pictured relaxing by the fireplace in an L.K. Bennett coat and dress, and walking the countryside with her husband in an Egg sweater and coat with black boots.
Theresa May is a known fan of Vogue magazine and chose a lifetime subscription as one of her items when she appeared on Desert Island Discs in 2014. She is also famous for her preference for statement footwear, including a pair of leopard print kitten heels that she wore to the 2002 Conservative Party Conference.
She was previously criticised after being photographed for the Sunday Times Magazine wearing £995 Amanda Wakeley leather trousers. Former Education Secretary Nicky Morgan questioned the PM’s choice of clothing for the shoot, stating: “I don’t have leather trousers. I don’t think I’ve ever spent that much on anything apart from my wedding dress.”
May says in the interview: “Throughout my political career, people have commented on what I wear. That’s just something that happens, and you accept that. But it doesn’t stop me from going out and enjoying fashion. And I also think it’s important to be able to show that a woman can do a job like this and still be interested in clothes.”
May also talks in the interview about her relationship with her husband (she does most of the cooking but he puts the bins out), and discusses the famous photo of her holding hands with Donald Trump outside the Whitehouse.
Britain’s only other female Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, was photographed for British Vogue four times, and former First Lady, Michele Obama made US Vogue’s cover three times. It’s thought Theresa May chose the American version of Vogue for the interview in order to raise her profile in the states.
