Dale of Norway Reissues Its Iconic 1992 Albertville Olympic Sweater

Dale of Norway has brought back its Albertville sweater, more than three decades after its Winter Olympics debut.

The Norwegian brand originally created the design for the country’s Olympic team in 1992. The team wore it during the Winter Games in Albertville, France.

Since then, the distinctive knit has become a sought-after piece of vintage Norwegian sportswear. Original versions continue to appear in vintage stores, private collections and resale marketplaces.

Now, Dale of Norway has returned to its archive to reintroduce the design for a new generation.

A Norwegian Olympic Classic Returns

The Albertville sweater stands out for its bold Nordic pattern and chunky wool construction.

Dale of Norway has kept the new version close to the 1992 original. Therefore, the signature pattern, crew neck and substantial knitted construction all remain.

The brand produces the sweater in Norway using 100% wool. Additionally, shoppers can choose from three colourways, with versions available for both men and women.

Its return arrives as archive fashion continues to influence contemporary wardrobes. In particular, heritage sportswear and traditional knitwear have found renewed audiences beyond their original settings.

The Albertville sweater fits neatly into that movement. However, its appeal also reflects growing interest in clothing designed for longevity rather than a single season.

Original Albertville sweaters remain in circulation more than 30 years after their Olympic appearance. As a result, the reissue has an authenticity that many archive-inspired collections cannot easily replicate.

Nearly 150 Years of Norwegian Knitwear

Dale of Norway’s connection with Norwegian winter sports stretches back decades.

The company was founded in Dalekvam, Norway, in 1879. Since then, it has built its reputation around wool knitwear and traditional Norwegian patterns.

The brand’s Olympic connection began in 1956, when it became an official supplier to the Norwegian Olympic Team.

Over the following decades, Dale of Norway created a series of designs connected to major Winter Games. Consequently, many of these sweaters now sit somewhere between performance clothing, national sporting history and collectible fashion.

The Albertville design remains one of the most recognisable examples.

Its return also taps into a broader appetite for well-made pieces with a story behind them. Rather than reinventing the sweater, Dale of Norway has largely allowed its original design to do the talking.

More than three decades after Albertville 1992, it turns out this particular piece of Olympic kit still has plenty of mileage left in it.
