Every few years, fashion follows a cycle, where particular pieces once again become the must-have garments. According to Karine Lauder, the founder of key flawless and a fashion trends expert, she believes this is due to a few factors.
One reason being designers often source inspiration from the past to design a collection or, for instance, a red-carpet masterpiece. Many designers love iconic retro fashions and want to revive them with a modern twist to suit today’s audience.
But designers aren’t the only ones responsible for fashion trends reoccurring. Karine also divulges social media users have a significant part to play. Particularly when they are inspired by fashion from decades ago.
You’ve likely noticed, nineties fashion appears to be making a big comeback everywhere! Gen Z takes the spotlight as the young and brave, mostly willing to don the nineties outfits style.
Whereas other generations such as millennials, are looking more so at the 70s inspired clothing, such as flares – which is a fashion trend that would serve to later inspire nineties style.
While we divulge a few retro pieces brought to you from the nineties below. There’s also a smidge of other fashion trends from many moons ago which have been revived by designers and are attracting attention.
1. Puffer Jacket
The puffer jacket is a statement piece revived from the nineties. The puffer jacket is otherwise known as a down jacket and bubble jacket. Shiny puffer jackets in particular were popular on the hip-hop scene. The great thing about these coats is, while they’re fashionable they are also practical for the winter months.
2. Flares
To replace tight-fitting skinny jeans, the opposition – flares, are making a comeback in stores this year.
They are a fashionable and smart choice for those wanting clothes to either lounge in or dress up in to go out!
The diversity of flares is one of many reasons it’s becoming a must-have item in 2022.
3. Bucket Hats
With celebrities rocking the bucket hat on their Instagram posts this year, it’s clear this item is gradually making its way back on the fashion scene.
During the sixties, the bucket hat evolved from a functional accessory to a fashionable one. While in the eighties the hat was adopted by the hip hop community by musicians such as Run DMC.
4. Platform Shoes
At the tip of 2021, another much loved and fun form of fashion started to remerge – the platform shoe.
Platform shoes have made an appearance every few decades, such as in the seventies and then the nineties – at which time the shoes were inspired by punk fashion.
They later appeared again in the 2000s when the Spice Girls got back together and began wearing their signature platform heels on the red carpet.
5. Slim-Fit Turtlenecks
Courtesy of the 90s, body-hugging ribbed turtlenecks are back in 2022.
Turtlenecks in dark hues are generally timeless pieces, so it never hurts to have one or more in your wardrobe – even more so now they’re back in style.
6. Corduroy and Velvet Trousers
These trousers are taking us way back into the seventies when at the time the most popular form of these rich fabrics was flared trousers in velvet or corduroy.
Today you’ll find this range of trousers in a variety of shops online and in stores. The benefits besides instant style are they feel very soft and comfortable. Plus they come in a range of flattering fits too.
