A strong outerwear wardrobe must have the perfect combination of British winter staples and this season’s must-haves. So the question we’ve asked ourselves is: if you could only have five coats and still have one that’s perfect for every occasion, which would you choose?
Tough one, right? Well, we’ve put our heads together and come up with our best selection.
Representing the staples, are: a black puffer jacket for everyday warmth, a chic long wool coat for everyday elegance, and a fun, cosy faux fur jacket for when you’re feeling extra fancy.

Burgundy and brown are the colours of the season. Warm, soft and cosy yet deep, rich and expensive looking, these hues are the palette to be seen in.

Best Wool Scarf Coat:
M&S Collection Detachable Scarf Wrap Coat, £75
The scarf coat is this winter’s biggest trend. Simply slide it on, throw the attached scarf over your shoulder and you’ve got yourself a chic outfit in an instant.
The luxury designer leading the way is Toteme with their Embroidered Scarf Jacket. But at £810 it’s not one for everyone. Maniére De Voir has a gorgeous 50% wool version that’s aesthetically very similar, for £250. But our favourite is this one from M&S Collection. It’s a beautiful, relaxed jacket with white embroidered seams and detachable scarf for only £75.

This slightly oversized funnel-neck coat is effortlessly elegant and very versatile. Wear it without the belt for a flowing, oversized line. Or tie the belt around your waist for an elegant hourglass silhouette, letting the high neck accentuate your length.
This is a wardrobe staple and we love the warm brown colour which is bang on trend for this winter.
Best Cosy Faux Fur Jacket:

You never know when it’s going to be a faux fur kind of day. It’s not every day, but when it comes around you’ve got to be ready. So, it’s worth finding one that transcends trends, one that fits you perfectly and makes you feel fabulous.
We love this one for the striking deep green colour, and slightly oversized fit with dropped sleeves that creates a boxy but elegant line. The curved edges of the collar soften it even further for a feminine finish.
Best Bomber:
Free People Vinny Vegan Bomber, £188
Brown suede bombers are cool once more. In fact, you’ve probably already seen a fair few wandering the streets throughout autumn. The deep chestnut brown of this bomber is cosy and bang on trend in this season’s colour palette.
We love balance of the slightly stiff fabric and the buttery soft feel. Just like real leather it’ll soften with age. And the extra wide, drop-shoulder sleeves create a subtle silhouette.
Best Staple Black Puffer Jacket:
Everlane, The Puffer Bomber, £219
The wardrobe wouldn’t be complete without the mandatory black puffer jacket. Is it even possible to survive a winter without one?
There’s very tough competition in this category, but this our favourite all-rounder, when we consider fit, technical features, quality, warmth, versatility, price and sustainability.
The Everlane puffer is slightly cropped, extremely warm, lightweight and made from recycled nylon and recycled down filling.
But of course, if price is your preference, Uniqlo’s Seamless Down Range is pretty much unbeatable. If warmth is most important, Patagonia’s classic range of down jackets will have you covered. And if versatility is key for you, the TALA Storm Multiway 3-in-1 Putter Jacket does what it says on the tin and transforms into three different styles using hidden zips.
