What does Finisterre mean in English?
“Finisterre” comes from the Latin finis terrae. It means “end of the earth.” It’s the point where land meets sea. It was also the former name of a Shipping Forecast area, renamed Fitzroy in 2002.
Founder Tom Kay chose the name from his childhood. He grew up listening to The Shipping Forecast on the radio. Its poetic guidance to seafarers battling storms always stayed with him. So, when he started his brand, the name felt right. It captures a brand built right at the edge of the ocean.

Finisterre produces its shirts in London at the WhiteHart factory. The merino wool in its knitted garments is 100% British. Finisterre sources it directly from Exmoor. In addition, the brand runs production across Portugal, Turkey and Romania. It holds B Corp certification — and it recertified again in 2025.
For Spring/Summer 2025, Finisterre made regenerative organic cotton the foundation of the collection. Over 75% of T-shirts now come from regeneratively farmed cotton. That’s a genuinely meaningful step forward.
How sustainable is Finisterre?
Very. Finisterre became the first outdoor apparel brand in Europe to earn B Corp certification, back in 2018. It then recertified in 2025. The brand uses GOTS-certified organic cotton and plastic-free, FSC-certified packaging. It also runs on 100% renewable energy across its offices and stores.
Furthermore, Finisterre uses no fur or leather. It sources wool from non-mulesed sheep only. It also pioneered the world’s first recyclable wetsuit. Then, in 2025, it launched Revive — a knitwear capsule built from 80% pre-consumer recycled wool and 20% post-consumer recycled wool. That wool even includes feedstock from returned Finisterre garments. As a result, it’s one of the most credible closed-loop projects any UK outdoor brand has delivered.
