The Ultimate Guide to Wedding Tuxedos (And How to Wear One Like You Mean It)

Here’s the thing about tuxedos – they’re meant to make you feel exceptional, not awkward.

After countless black-tie events and weddings (including my own spectacular near-miss with a poorly fitted rental), I’ve learned exactly what makes the difference between looking sharp and looking like you’re wearing your old school uniform.

And thanks to services like Generation Tux, getting that perfect fit is easier than ever – no last-minute panic required.

Whether you’re the groom or simply aiming to be the best-dressed guest, this guide will help you nail that black-tie look.

Let’s Talk Tuxedo Styles

There’s something almost magical about finding that perfect cut that makes you stand a bit taller.

These days, you’ve got options:

The Shawl Collar: Think of this as the George Clooney of tuxedos – it never goes out of style. That continuous curve of silk from collar to lapel is pure class. It’s particularly flattering if you’re on the shorter side or have a rounder face, as it creates one clean, elongating line. Perfect for traditional black-tie events where you want to look timeless in photos.

Peak Lapels: This is your power move. Those upward-pointing lapels create strong shoulder lines and make you look taller – it’s basically architectural engineering for your body. They’re a bit more dramatic than the shawl collar, making them perfect for formal evening weddings or when you really need to command a room. Plus, they look killer in photographs.

Notch Lapels: The most common on regular suits, but slightly controversial in tux-world. Here’s the truth: while traditionalists might scoff, a well-done notch lapel tuxedo can look fantastic, especially for daytime events or slightly less formal weddings. They’re also great if you’re new to formal wear and want something that feels familiar.

Double-Breasted: The boss level of tuxedo styles. It’s a bold choice that requires confidence (and good posture) to pull off, but when done right? Unbeatable. Just remember: this style should always stay buttoned when you’re standing, so it’s not ideal if you’re planning to tear up the dance floor all night.

Whether you’re buying off the peg or working with your local tailor, the perfect fit should feel like a second skin – comfortable enough to dance in, sharp enough to turn heads.

The basics are simple: shoulders should end exactly where yours do, sleeves should show a hint of cuff, and the jacket should cover your backside without looking like a dress. When the jacket’s buttoned, you should be able to slide your hand in to grab your wallet without the fabric straining.

I’ve seen too many blokes at weddings looking uncomfortable because their tuxedo fits like they borrowed their dad’s suit. A proper fit should feel like your favourite jeans – comfortable enough to wear all day, but sharp enough to make your ex do a double-take.

Fit can make a budget tuxedo look expensive, while poor fit can make an expensive tuxedo look cheap. Take the time to get it right – your wedding photos will thank you.

Fabric Choices (Because Weather is… Unpredictable)

After freezing through a December wedding and sweating through a July ceremony in velvet, I’ve learned that mastering fabric choice is crucial.

Whether you need a tuxedo in North Carolina for a garden party in the summer heat, or you’re attending a winter wedding in North London, here’s your seasonal fabric guide:

Summer: Lightweight cotton is your best friend – it breathes, moves, and forgives that extra slice of cake.

Autumn/Fall: This is wool’s time to shine. Medium-weight wool hits that sweet spot – substantial enough for evening chill but won’t have you overheating on the dance floor. Plus, it travels well.

Winter: Here’s where you can have some fun. Velvet is an absolute boss move for evening events. Not feeling that bold? A heavier wool will never let you down.

Spring: Classic wool, but keep it light enough for those surprise sunny spells. The key here is versatility – you want something that can handle both that surprise April shower or unexpected heat wave.

Accessories: The Details That Matter

This is where you can have some fun without looking like you’re trying too hard.

Let’s talk about the bits that transform a tuxedo from good to “damn, who’s that?” A black bow tie is classic for a reason, but it’s just the beginning. Here’s what you need to know:

The Bow Tie Situation: Learn to tie one. Seriously. Nothing says “I made an effort” quite like a slightly imperfect hand-tied bow tie.

Cummerbund or Vest: Think of these as the middle man between sharp and sloppy. A cummerbund keeps things sleek, while a vest (or waistcoat, if you’re feeling fancy) adds a bit more personality. Just never wear both – that’s like wearing two hats.

Pocket Square: This little piece of fabric is your chance to have some fun. White silk is foolproof, but a subtle pattern can add just enough personality without screaming for attention.

Cufflinks & Studs: Keep them simple and coordinated. They’re like the punctuation marks of your outfit – necessary, but they shouldn’t be the first thing people notice.

Watch: If you’re wearing one, keep it slim enough to slip under your cuff. This isn’t the time for that chunky sports watch, no matter how much it cost.

Remember: When it comes to accessories, always subtract one thing before walking out the door. You want to look effortlessly elegant, not like you’re wearing everything in your drawer.

Choosing Your Colours (Without Looking Like a Peacock)

Let’s be real about colour – it’s all about understanding the difference between looking memorable and looking like you’re trying to steal focus from the wedding cake. Here’s your complete colour guide:

Classic Black: Still the undisputed champion of evening wear. It’s foolproof, timeless, and works for literally any wedding or black-tie event.

Midnight Navy: Currently having its main character moment, and for good reason. It’s sophisticated enough for formal affairs but photographs like a dream. Plus, it’s more forgiving than black if you end up in bright daylight. Works especially well for summer weddings when black might feel a bit heavy.

Deep Burgundy: Perfect for fall or winter weddings. Think less “wine spill” and more “vintage port.” It’s bold without being loud, especially in subtle fabrics like velvet or a matte wool. Just make sure you’re not matching the bridesmaids – that’s the groom’s job.

Forest Green: The dark horse of formal wear (pun intended). Done right, it’s incredibly elegant, especially for garden or country house weddings. The key is keeping it dark and rich – we’re talking evening in the woods, not mini-golf course.

Charcoal Grey: The sophisticated middle ground between black and navy. It’s formal enough for evening but soft enough for the daytime. Perfect if you want something different but aren’t ready to go full burgundy.

Pro tip: Whatever colour you choose, the fit becomes even more crucial. A perfectly tailored navy tuxedo will always look better than an ill-fitting black one. And remember – if you’re going with a coloured tuxedo, keep your accessories simple. Let the suit do the talking.

Taking Care of Your Investment

Listen, a good tuxedo is like a good watch – treat it right, and it’ll serve you well for years.

Get it properly cleaned after each wearing (trust me, wedding cake crumbs have a way of appearing in mysterious places), and for heaven’s sake, invest in proper hangers. Your future self will thank you.

The Eternal Question: Rent or Buy?

Here’s my take: If you’ve got a busy social calendar ahead (or planning to), buy. Nothing beats a tuxedo that’s been tailored specifically for you. But if it’s a one-off thing, renting isn’t a crime – just make sure you’re getting quality.

Remember, wearing a tuxedo isn’t about following rules – it’s about feeling like the best version of yourself. Whether you’re heading to a grand ballroom or a boutique hotel, the right tuxedo will make you feel unstoppable.
