Womenswear fashion trends autumn 2023

Reading Time: 3 mins read

New season, new fashion trends. Autumn is well and truly here and with it, a need to wrap up warm and dust-off jumpers and coats!

For autumn 2023, fashion trends are easy to follow – unless you adhere to the sheer look and no trousers trend, which may look good on the red carpet and runway, but seem slightly unrealistic on the tube.

For some fashion inspiration that you can actually wear to the office, read on…

Full-length black coat

Givenchy Overcoat in Satin, £3,650

A trend we can really get behind is the black coat. Oversized, full-length… did anybody say warm?

Think Wednesday Addams and look to Alaïa, Givenchy and Victoria Beckham’s dramatic sharp shoulders for an update on the classic.

Whether you go designer or high street, look for investment fabrics: a black coat won’t ever go out of style, so this is the perfect piece to add to your wardrobe if you don’t already own one.

Power dressing

Victoria Beckham, Tailored Straight Leg Trouser In Serpent Green, £490

The 80s are back in the shape of business dressing. We’re all going to the office again, in some way or other, and our wardrobe reflect this. Say goodbye to your loungewear and rediscover the joy of smart dressing.

Blazers, tailored trousers, pencil skirts, structured jackets and yes, sharp shoulders are all making a comeback.

Winter florals

Erdem, Long Sleeve Cape Effect Gown, £1,890

Erdem, McQueen, Balenciaga, Chanel, Jil Sander, Louis Vuitton, Burberry and Christopher Kane all featured dark blooms, with florals no longer reserved for spring and summer.

To update the look for autumn, floral prints take on a moody hue. Dark base colours make florals perfectly autumn-y. This is one trend we absolutely love, refusing to let go of summer while already looking forward to winter.

Snatched waist

Alaïa Crossed Belt in Lux Calfskin, £1,190

The hourglass silhouette is a key trend for autumn 2023. Wide shoulder tailoring, wide belts, corsets and snatched waists all combine to make the classic Hollywood siren body shape the ultimate goal of the season.

Smart tailoring and accessories will help you achieve the look without having to change your diet or exercise regimen: look for pieces that accentuate shoulders and hips, invest in some belts and you’re ready to go.

Punk

Vivienne Westwood Artist jumper, £360

Dame Vivienne Westwood, the Grand Dame of Punk may have died in December, but her spirit lives on this season with everyone nodding to her punk heritage.

Tartans, punk t-shirts, leather, studs and spikes are all an acceptable way to pay homage to Westwood this autumn.

It’s not just about punk clothing, however. Punk is a state of mind and activism was the way the late designer kept punk relevant way beyond its mohawk years. So if you’d rather not transform your day bag into a studded weapon, follow in the footsteps of Viv’ by shouting about what you believe in and giving two fingers’ up to the establishment, whatever that looks like to you.

Metallics

All Saints Hadley Metallic Midi Slip Dress, £97.30

Looking forward to the party season, metallics are already in for autumn. You don’t need to keep them for the evening either, with metallics paired up with casual jeans and leggings, or neutral colours perfectly acceptable in the daytime.

Metallics this season aren’t timid, with head-to-toe looks seen on the runway. To make the trend a bit easier for everyday wear, look to shiny fabrics instead of sparkles.

Oversized scarves

Saint Laurent Extra-Long Scarf in Tartan Alpaca wool & mohair, £810

Time to wrap up, literally. Scarves are taking inspiration from blankets and have been seen oversized everywhere. It’s up to you whether you want to go for something classic and muted a la Michael Kors or add a pop of colour to your outfit as seen at Saint Laurent.

It’s worth noting scarves have been teamed up with absolutely every outfit on the runway. Whatever you’re wearing, evening wear or casual weekend walk in the park outfits, a massive scarf will go with it.

Colour of the season:

Red as seen at Valentino, Jacquemus, Stella McCartney, Lanvin, Bottega Veneta, Loewe, Prada, Gucci…
