Why These European Cities Deserve Every Bit of Their Fame

Why These European Cities Deserve Every Bit of Their Fame

Some European cities look inviting while researching your next vacation destination, yet end up being disappointing due to overtourism or lackluster variety once you actually get there. Others deserve every bit of the hype they get. Here are four iconic cities that even the most glowing reviews don’t do justice, and a few practical travel tips that will make your stay even more enjoyable.

Paris, France

Despite contrarian grumbling, Paris deserves its status as the most recognizable European city. Yes, it’s touristy and can feel overwhelming. However, Paris remains a city with exceptional local character built for residents first, which happens to attract a lot of visitors.

While not as layered as Rome, it’s equally if not more culturally dense wherever you wish to explore. Grand architecture and spacious boulevards coexist harmoniously alongside small bohemian neighborhoods and hole-in-the-wall bistros offering Michelin-grade fare.

Seeing the Eiffel Tower and strolling down the Champs-Élysées are non-negotiable. Meanwhile, museum lovers will want to dedicate at least a few days of their stay to take in the sheer volume of world-class exhibits on offer at the Louvre and Musée d’Orsay. Before you head out to enjoy the nightlife, be sure to take a sunset boat ride down the Seine River for another unforgettable memory.

Rome, Italy

Rome’s is a different kind of culture; vibrant, yet rooted in two-and-a-half millennia of tumultuous history. No other city on the planet offers as many layers of historical immersion, forming a vivacious chaos that rewards the thorough explorer. You’ll naturally want to take in the main sites, but discovering secret keyholes or less-visited water features when going off the beaten path is just as rewarding.

Visit the Colosseum and Forum to get a sense of the scale and grandeur that the Roman Empire was capable of. The Palazzo Colonna and Villa Farnesina offer a glimpse into Renaissance-era aristocratic culture. If you’re looking for something more modern, the art nouveau chic of Quartiere Coppedè or the displays at the MAXXI Museum are sure to scratch that itch.

Prague, Czechia

Prague’s vibe is in stark contrast with our first two picks. It’s more melancholic and invites introspection, especially if you decide to visit in winter. The city wasn’t reshaped by Baroque renovation trends and was largely spared from destruction during WWII. Much of its medieval core remains Gothic, exemplifying the brooding, skyward style that makes Prague feel grounded.

Watching the sunrise from Charles Bridge or marveling at St. Vitus Cathedral are essential Gothic experiences. Of course, no visit to Prague would be complete without touring the Prague Castle complex, either. Buildings like the Žižkov Television Tower and Hotel International Prague are worthwhile remnants of the Communist era, while the metro is modern yet distinct.

Amsterdam, the Netherlands

Amsterdam might be our most down-to-earth pick. While there’s plenty to see and do, Amsterdam doesn’t feel as dominated by specific cultural landmarks as other top-tier European city destinations. Rather, its compact neighborhoods, cycling-friendly infrastructure, and ubiquitous canals make Amsterdam feel cozy. It’s a city designed for human-scale living, and that’s a strong source of appeal in its own right.

That said, you shouldn’t miss out on standout landmarks like Anne Frank’s house or the Rijksmuseum. The Jordaan is Amsterdam’s most atmospheric neighborhood, where canals, narrow homes, and courtyards create a maze-like warren you won’t mind getting lost in.

Making the Most out of Your Trip

First-time travelers’ expectations of European travel don’t always line up with reality. Keep the following tips in mind for a smoother and more enjoyable trip.

  • Rushing through as many cities and attractions as possible will leave you exhausted and cheapen the experience. Limit yourself to a few core hubs and adopt a flexible itinerary for a more memorable stay.
  • Get a VPN subscription for the region of Europe you’ll be visiting. It lets you browse securely on any network — including public Wi-Fi in hotels, cafés, and airports — while protecting your data from prying eyes.
  • Most European countries have efficient, highly developed train transport. If you account for airport time, train travel is more comfortable and often not that much slower than flying. Plus, you get to easily travel from one city center to another.
  • Consider going during the shoulder season. There are fewer crowds and more natives than in July and August, so you’re getting a more authentic experience. The prices tend to be lower, too.
  • European cities are walkable, and areas like Rome’s central districts or Prague’s historic center are designed to be traversed entirely on foot. Pace yourself if you’re not used to so much walking and adjust your itinerary accordingly.
