Who is HAVEN?

HAVEN is a Canadian menswear retailer and in-house label founded in 2006 by brothers Arthur and Daniel Chmielewski. Before that, both had studied finance and worked corporate jobs, until they left to open a shop in Edmonton. Later, in 2009, they moved the business west to Vancouver, and a Toronto store followed in 2012.

At first, HAVEN was known as a multi-brand store. In particular, it built a following by stocking Japanese labels and technical outerwear that rarely reached North America. Then, around 2016, the brothers launched their own line. Since then, that in-house collection has become the company’s most successful brand. Arthur leads as creative director, while Daniel runs operations as COO.

The label calls its work “Equipment for Living”. In practice, that means clothes shaped by the wet, cold Pacific Northwest. To that end, HAVEN sources fabric from long-established mills and works with makers in Canada and Japan. As a result, the pieces feel built to last rather than built for a season.

What makes HAVEN outerwear different?

In short, three things set HAVEN outerwear apart from other technical menswear:

  • Fabric first. The brand uses Loro Piana Storm System wool and GORE-TEX membranes, as well as PrimaLoft Gold insulation and fleece developed in Wakayama, Japan.
  • Where it’s made. Most pieces are cut and sewn in Canada, while the most technical items come from Japan.
  • Considered hardware. Expect premium YKK zips (Excella, Metaluxe and AquaGuard), plus microsuede-lined pockets and, on the shells, taped seams.

Overall, it adds up to a wardrobe that suits a commute in the rain as well as a weekend on the trail.

The edit: 7 best HAVEN pieces for FW26

1. HAVEN Alpine Jacket – Melange Wool, Earth

HAVEN outerwear Alpine Jacket in earth melange wool

Essentially, the Alpine Jacket is HAVEN’s take on the classic outdoor fleece, rebuilt in brushed wool. Its fabric was developed in Wakayama, Japan, so it gives natural warmth and breathability with a soft hand. Raglan sleeves with set-in shoulder caps keep movement easy. Meanwhile, herringbone tape at the collar, cuffs and hem adds a quiet finishing detail. For that reason, it works as a mid-layer under a shell, but also on its own on crisp autumn days.

  • Fabric: 100% wool fleece, brushed melange
  • Fit: Relaxed
  • Made in: Canada
  • Price: $440

2. HAVEN x Timberland Field Boot GTX – Suede, Camo Grey

This collaboration updates Timberland’s classic hiker in a tonal grey palette. On the outside, the upper mixes hairy suede and nubuck, while a calfskin collar adds extra texture. Inside, a waterproof GORE-TEX lining and PrimaLoft insulation keep feet dry and warm. In addition, a Vibram sole and reinforced toe cap handle both city pavements and muddy paths. Above all, it is the easiest way to buy into HAVEN at a lower price point.

  • Upper: Hairy suede, nubuck and calfskin
  • Lining: GORE-TEX waterproof, PrimaLoft insulated
  • Fit: True to size
  • Price: $200

3. HAVEN Bureau Overcoat – Loro Piana Storm System Wool, Earth

HAVEN outerwear Bureau Overcoat in earth Loro Piana Storm System wool

Undoubtedly, the Bureau Overcoat is the hero of the collection. HAVEN cuts it from Loro Piana Capolavoro wool with a three-layer Storm System membrane built in. In other words, it looks like a tailored wool coat but blocks wind and shrugs off rain. At the same time, articulated sleeves and underarm gussets allow free movement. Furthermore, a concealed zip and snap placket, a convertible throat tab and snap cuffs add real utility. Therefore, it is the coat to buy if you want one piece for both the office and the weekend.

  • Fabric: 100% wool, Loro Piana Storm System 3L
  • Lining: Italian viscose-cotton twill
  • Fit: Relaxed
  • Made in: Canada
  • Price: $1,130

4. HAVEN Logan Parka – GORE-TEX WINDSTOPPER 2L, Peat

When the temperature really drops, the Logan Parka is built for proper cold. Its two-layer GORE-TEX WINDSTOPPER shell is windproof, water-resistant and breathable. Beneath it, 200g of PrimaLoft Gold insulation adds warmth without bulk. You also get an insulated, adjustable hood, a dual-zip front and inner mesh dump pockets for gloves or a hat. Finally, the earthy peat colour works with denim, wool trousers and everything in between.

  • Shell: Nylon ripstop, WINDSTOPPER by GORE-TEX LABS
  • Insulation: PrimaLoft Gold, 200g
  • Certifications: bluesign Approved, OEKO-TEX Certified
  • Made in: Canada
  • Price: $630

5. HAVEN Logan Parka – Loro Piana Storm System Wool, Charcoal

By contrast, this limited-run version swaps the nylon shell for Loro Piana Storm System wool. Consequently, the Logan Parka takes on a softer, dressier look while keeping its weather protection. Otherwise, it shares the same PrimaLoft Gold fill, insulated hood and microsuede-lined hand pockets. Choose it if you want a parka that sits as comfortably over tailoring as over a hoodie. However, stock was already running low in some sizes when we checked.

  • Shell: 100% wool, Loro Piana 2L Storm System
  • Insulation: PrimaLoft Gold, 200g
  • Made in: Canada
  • Price: $750

6. HAVEN Field Cap – Loro Piana Storm System Wool, Earth

HAVEN Field Cap in earth Loro Piana Storm System wool

Next, the Field Cap brings the collection’s best fabric into an accessible piece. It uses the same Loro Piana Storm System wool, so it resists wind and rain while still breathing. Additionally, a Toray Fieldsensor headband manages moisture, and a microfibre jersey lining keeps it comfortable. Meanwhile, the six-panel build and structured brim give it shape. For a matching look, pair it with the Bureau Overcoat in the same earth tone.

  • Fabric: 100% wool, Loro Piana Storm System
  • Fit: One size fits most
  • Made in: Japan
  • Price: $175

7. HAVEN Spectre Jacket – GORE-TEX 3L Nylon, Black

HAVEN Spectre Jacket in black GORE-TEX 3L nylon

Last but not least, the Spectre Jacket is HAVEN’s most technical shell. Although it comes from FW25, it remains a core piece for serious weather. Specifically, it is made in Japan from three-layer GORE-TEX with a 70-denier nylon face, so it is fully waterproof, windproof and breathable. Fully taped seams, AquaGuard zips and an adjustable visored hood keep the rain out. In addition, two-tier chest pockets, a sleeve pocket and snap-flap lower pockets give you plenty of storage. Then, for a complete winter system, layer the Alpine Jacket underneath.

  • Fabric: 100% nylon, GORE-TEX 3L with ePE membrane
  • Certifications: bluesign Approved, OEKO-TEX Certified
  • Made in: Japan
  • Price: $950

How to build a HAVEN winter uniform

Start with layers rather than one heavy coat. For example, the Alpine Jacket and Spectre Jacket together cover everything from a dry, cold morning to a downpour. Alternatively, for the office, choose the Bureau Overcoat with the Field Cap. When deep winter arrives, either Logan Parka will do the job on its own. Then finish any look with the HAVEN x Timberland Field Boot.

Frequently asked questions

Where is HAVEN based?

HAVEN is based in Vancouver, Canada, and also has a second store in Toronto. Originally, brothers Arthur and Daniel Chmielewski founded it in Edmonton in 2006.

Is HAVEN outerwear worth the money?

For most buyers, yes. HAVEN uses premium fabrics such as Loro Piana Storm System wool and GORE-TEX. Moreover, most pieces are made in Canada or Japan, and the hardware and finishing match brands that cost far more.

What is Loro Piana Storm System wool?

Storm System is a Loro Piana fabric that bonds a protective membrane to fine wool. As a result, it looks and feels like tailoring but still resists wind and water.

How does HAVEN sizing work?

HAVEN uses sizes 01/S to 04/XL. Generally, FW26 jackets and coats have a relaxed fit, so many people take their usual size. Similarly, the HAVEN x Timberland boot fits true to size.

Which HAVEN piece should I buy first?

If you want one coat for everything, choose the Bureau Overcoat. On the other hand, the Spectre Jacket is the better buy if you live somewhere very wet. For a lower entry price, however, start with the Field Cap or the Field Boot.

The verdict

All in all, HAVEN outerwear proves that technical clothing can look refined. The FW26 collection leans on exceptional fabrics, Canadian and Japanese making, and cuts that work in town as well as outdoors. Whether you choose the $175 Field Cap or the $1,130 Bureau Overcoat, you are therefore buying a piece designed to last for many winters. So explore the full collection at HAVEN.
