Winter fashion may bring to mind a lot of coats and comfy sweats, but there’s more to it than simply staying warm. Even if your ultimate goal is to avoid the cold as much as possible, it doesn’t mean you have to compromise aesthetically speaking.
For those who see the end of the year as more than just the season to embrace elastication – we get it, that third portion of roast potatoes really was irresistible – winter is a fantastic time to embrace layering and dressing up for festive occasions, even if they may be more low-key this year.
If you’re slightly confused about what to look for, don’t worry. We’re here to help and we’ve come up with the 7 things every man needs in his winter capsule wardrobe.
You’ll notice there aren’t any trousers on this list. We trust you understand that you do, in fact, also need trousers. But since trousers are not so season-specific, we’ll leave you to figure out what you need.
1. The Coat
Let’s start with the most important piece of your winter wardrobe: the coat.
Many things can spill over from spring, autumn, and even summer into winter – except your speedos, keep those for Santorini – but you’ll need a coat, and a reliable one at that.

2. The Jacket
You can’t go wrong with Barbour jackets. This one is perfect for layering or wearing on its own if you’re not someone who feels the cold so much. Trust us, Barbour goes with everything.

3. The Party Jacket
Winter is a time for dressing up, even if it’s only for a glass of champagne with your housemates or to going over to grandma’s for tea.
While you don’t need a full suit to be dapper, a good jacket is a must, and should most definitely be part of a capsule wardrobe no matter the season.
For winter, go for heavier fabrics and embrace pattern or texture (think velvet). And most importantly, have fun with it.

4. The Knit
Whether you go for a jumper or a cardigan, every winter wardrobe needs some knitwear.
Layering is key during the colder months, and knitwear not only looks good, it’ll also help you keep warm.
Go for a basic shape and a neutral colour and you’ll keep reaching for this piece through until spring.

5. The Hoodie
Dressing down can be as fun as dressing up.
This hoodie shouldn’t be part of your gym kit, but instead act as your go-to for everyday casual wear, so pick a colour that goes with everything – like black – and make sure you get the right size.

6. The Shoes
A pair of leather boots will be your friends all winter. Perfect for dressing up or down, Chelseas are a classic for a reason.
But they’re not the only choice when it comes to beautiful boots.
Whatever you go for, make sure they’re comfy and will withstand the elements.

7. The Watch
Watches are a great way to make any outfit look instantly that bit more polished.
If a true capsule wardrobe is your goal, you’ll be wearing some great clothes on repeat, and accessories will be your friends.
Watches are arguably the best men’s fashion accessory.
