The ultimate guide on what to wear this Christmas Day

It may be the season to be jolly, but that can be hard when you’re feeling uninspired by your winter wardrobe. On top of trying to stay warm and make it through to December 31st, this is also the season of parties and social gatherings, albeit potentially dialled-down this year.

From catching up with friends and family to dressing up for a party in your living room, putting together outfits in winter can be a bit of a minefield.

Though we can’t control the weather, or help you decide how many episodes of Sex and the City is too many in one sitting, we CAN help you with what to wear.

From a walk in the park on a bright, crisp day to Christmas lunch, we’ve got every outfit you may need this season covered.

Outerwear

Let’s start with one of the most important considerations. Winter is the perfect opportunity to invest in a beautiful coat that will require very minimal effort with the outfit underneath. A great coat is also the ultimate mood booster when it’s a bit grotty outside.

Monsoon – Sadie Faux Fur Trim Wrap Coat – £250

There are so many great choices – from something classic, to going all out and choosing bright colours, patterns or anything else that makes you feel good.

V by Very – Single Breasted Coat – Pink – £75

Walk

Binky x Very – Knitted Cable Turtleneck Tunic – Ivory – £35

Blowing away the winter cobwebs with a walk is so important for our minds and bodies. If you can’t bear to part with your leggings for the occasion (and why would you) you can still up the ante style-wise with a classic bit of knitwear.

Knitwear is one of the joys of winter. It’s cosy, it’s casual, it’s soft, it’s warm… what’s not to love?

Lunch

Michelle Keegan – High Neck Zip Through Jumper Dress – Beige – £45

Whether it’s just a low-key booking at the local or you’re hosting a few friends, it’s lovely to have something easy but feel-good to wear for the occasion.

We’re big fans of the sweater dress – basically a longer, slightly less casual version of your walk jumper.

V by Very – High Neck Wrap Midi Dress – Emerald – £28

Alternatively, the wrap midi dress is a “women who lunch” favourite for a reason, and it can be accessorised to suit your mood.

Dinner

V by Very – Pintuck Detail Georgette Blouse – Green Animal Print – £25

Fabric, colour, patterns… it’s all part of the fun when it comes to more dressed-up dinners. Pick something that makes you look and feel good, but more importantly, wear something that makes you happy.

Chi Chi London – One Shoulder Jumpsuit – Green – £70

It’s worth noting dinner may not be the time to wear something skin-tight, unless you’re very good at resisting dessert. We’re not, so we’d probably go for something floaty-ish.

Monsoon – VERONIQUE VELVET SHIRT DRESS – £99

Party

RI Petite – Wrap Sequin Dress – Purple – £80

Go mad. Seriously, go crazy, this is your time to shine – even if it’s only under the lights of your living room.

It doesn’t matter if you’re more of a dress kind of woman or would rather go with a top and trousers. The outfit you dreamt about during those long pandemic leggings days? You’re wearing it.

Quiz – Sequin Mini Dress – £37

We can’t really help you with your dream outfit, because we’re not you. All we can say is that a winter party in pandemic times is no time to wonder whether “that outfit is appropriate” or if “that dress makes me look ridiculous”. You’ve made it to the end of another year, so dial it up and get dancing.
