The nights are slowly getting lighter, and the temperature might not have caught up just yet but Spring is definitely on the way. It’s time to cast off those bulky winter layers and get ready to embrace the warmer months with a new capsule wardrobe.
Capsule wardrobes are all about simplicity, and in these days where we’re most of us are more focused on sustainability rather than fast fashion, we’re not advocating you go out and buy a whole new wardrobe.
But it is possible to create a whole new look for the coming season with the addition of just a handful of flexible basics. We’ve put together an edit of 10 pieces that, when mixed and matched, will give you a different look for every day of the week.
What Is a Capsule Wardrobe?
But first, a little reminder of what we’re actually talking about when it comes to a capsule wardrobe. The idea is to have a small selection of pieces that can be worn in different combinations to create a variety of different looks. The concept is to focus on quality, versatile items that you really love and will last season after season, rather than buying lots of cheap, mismatched pieces.
And of course, in order to be able to make outfits from these pieces, you’ll need to stick with a colour theme. Black, white and navy are the most versatile colours to work with, but any neutrals will also work and you can feel free to add touches of your favourite shades.
1. Floral Midi Dress
A mid-length floral dress is a great way to transition from winter to spring. If it’s still a little chilly, you can layer it with a chunky cardigan or oversized blazer and pair it with ankle boots. Come summer, you can wear it on its own with sandals or trainers.

2. Lightweight trench coat or blazer
A classic trench coat or blazer is a key item for layering. It’s perfect for those days when it’s not quite warm enough to go without a jacket, but you don’t want the bulk of your winter coat. A navy coat is always a safe bet, or opt for the traditional beige trench coat that will go with any outfit.

3. A pair of jeans you can dress up or down
We’d always recommend investing in a good pair of jeans you love, as they are a wardrobe essential. A cropped, straight-leg style is ideal for spring as it will work with both trainers and heels. Look for a mid-rise style that doesn’t cut you off at the waist and opt for a dark rinse, so they can easily be dressed up or down.

4. Classic White Shirt
A crisp white shirt will never go out of style and should be a staple in any wardrobe. It’s perfect for the office, but can also look chic tucked into jeans or layered under sweaters.

5. Tailored Trousers
Tailored trousers are great for creating professional looks that still feel comfortable enough to wear all day. Look for a flat-front style that fits well at the waist and hips and is tapered slightly at the ankle.

6. A versatile knit in a neutral colour
A soft knit is ideal for layering over shirts and dresses when it’s cooler, and let’s face it – we don’t have many days in the UK where you don’t need a knit of some sort. A neutral colour such as black, white or cream will go with everything, but feel free to experiment with other shades if you want something a little different.

7. A floaty skirt
Floaty skirts are the ideal lazy-girl piece for spring – just add a t-shirt and you’ve got yourself an instant outfit. Look for midi styles in a lightweight fabric, with pleats or ruffles to give your look a feminine touch. Lighter colours are more appropriate for spring, but darker shades can also work if you keep the rest of your look neutral. Florals are always a good option too.

8. Plain t-shirts
This may be cheating slightly as it’s not a single item, but t-shirts are cheap enough that you can stock up on a few in your capsule wardrobe. Plain, white tees are essential for creating casual looks and other neutral colours such as grey or black can create a different feel for your outfit.

9. Comfy loungewear
Just a few years back, loungewear would have never made it into a capsule wardrobe, but these days it’s essential. We are the post-covid work from home generation, after all. Look for comfortable, stylish pieces that you can wear around the house but still feel put together.

10. A pair of stylish flats
Finally, no spring capsule wardrobe is complete without a pair of stylish flats. Look for ballet pumps or loafers in classic colours such as black or tan. They will go with anything from jeans to skirts and dresses and can easily be dressed up or down.

Spring Into Style
These 10 pieces will give you plenty of options for all sorts of occasions, from your casual everyday routine to fun weekends away. You can dress up simple ensembles with jewellery and accessories, or simply keep it classic and minimal. And with all the money you’ll save from not buying unnecessary items, you can splurge on a few statement pieces to inject some fun into your wardrobe. Happy shopping!
