High-profile attendees layered dramatic rings alongside statement necklaces, cuffs and sculptural accessories, proving that cocktail rings are no longer reserved for formal occasions alone. Instead, they are becoming central styling pieces capable of transforming an entire look.
According to Sophie Lomax, Head of Design at Austen & Blake, the appeal lies in their unapologetically bold aesthetic.
“Cocktail rings refer to a style of ring where more is more,” explains Lomax. “You can expect heavily detailed pieces with large, brightly coloured gemstones at the heart of the design, often further embellished with diamond accents and statement metalwork such as filigree or milgrain.”
Originally popularised during the 1920s prohibition era, cocktail rings became synonymous with excess, glamour and rebellion. Worn to lavish underground parties, the oversized designs quickly evolved into symbols of confidence and individuality. The trend later resurfaced during the 1950s and 1960s, becoming a staple accessory among Hollywood icons and high society alike.
Now, nearly a century later, the jewellery trend is returning with a distinctly modern edge.

Among the evening’s standout looks was Nicole Kidman, who paired her crimson Chanel gown with what is believed to be a Chanel Joaillerie Cruise cocktail ring featuring a striking red spinel centre stone.
According to Lomax, the piece likely incorporated accent diamonds, lapis lazuli and detailed microsetting techniques, creating a dramatic high-jewellery finish.
“The design is reminiscent of a signet ring and is said to be inspired by rings worn by Gabrielle Chanel herself,” says Lomax. “Some of those original pieces featured octagonal centre stones, which later inspired the shape of Chanel perfume bottles.”
The ring is estimated to be worth between £200,000 and £350,000, although experts suggest the value could climb significantly higher if the spinel originates from Burma, where some of the world’s rarest stones are sourced.
The dramatic accessory perfectly complemented Kidman’s feathered sequin gown, reinforcing the growing trend of statement jewellery serving as the focal point of an outfit rather than a finishing touch.
Rihanna Leaned Into Full Maximalism
Rihanna also embraced the cocktail ring revival, wearing three oversized diamond rings layered across both hands.
Two of the designs reportedly featured elaborate double halo settings, with concentric circles of pavé diamonds surrounding substantial centre stones. Styled alongside her wider high-fashion look, the rings captured the return of unapologetic glamour currently dominating luxury fashion.
The styling also reflected a broader industry shift away from quiet luxury and pared-back accessories, as consumers increasingly gravitate towards expressive pieces with personality and presence.
