Menswear fashion trends Autumn 2023

Gucci Printed Nylon Bomber Jacket, £1,800

Fashion trends change with the season, and with the colder weather comes some new fashion vibes. Goodbye shorts and swimwear, hello knits and coats.

Menswear trends this autumn look back in time and reinvent some beloved classics for an autumn 2023 silhouette that’s resolutely of the moment without breaking continuity with what’s come before.

Keep on reading for the menswear fashion trends you need to know for autumn 2023…

Tailoring

Rick Owens jacket, £2,645

Let’s start with the basics. Tailoring is a menswear’s mainstay, and every season sees a new iteration. For Autumn 2023, tailoring is still in, but it’s up to you how you interpret it.

Whether classic or loose, tailoring will be everywhere. Oversized was seen at Dior, Rick Owens played with the silhouette and paired a classic jacket with oversized trousers… the only version we believe is truly out? Skinny, restrictive tailoring.

Yes, your waist can be snatched but keep those trouser legs wide.

Tailoring was seen at Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Kenzo, Egonlab and Emporio Armani too.

When it comes to colours, you do you. From pastels to classic black, the one rule seems to be a head-to-toe look.

Full-length overcoats

Saint Laurent oversized coat in wool, £4,170

Autumn and winter are coat seasons. The best pieces to make a fashion statement with are outerwear, and this year’s no different.

Long, full-length coats are making a comeback. Saint Laurent, Ami, Amiri, Dolce and Gabbana, Fendi… everyone had a take on a swooping coat that will scream fashion statement while still look incredibly polished and classic.

Classic outerwear colours are best, so think camel, grey, navy, or dark green if you want to stay away from black.

Bomber jackets

Gucci printed nylon bomber jacket, £1,800

Fashion trends are always about extremes. Every season, everything and its opposites are in, which leaves most of us scratching our heads.

This Autumn, while long, full-length overcoats are in, so are bomber jackets.

Rick Owens and Prada lengthened their bombers, making them oversized, but bombers were also seen with a more “traditional” length at Gucci, and Dolce and Gabbana. When it comes to fabric, it seems nobody can agree, from nylon to leather, everything goes.

Grunge

Givenchy, Two in one detachable pants in Boro-effect destroyed denim, £2,390

We’re going back in time, it’s the heyday of grunge and everyone is trying very hard to look like they haven’t tried at all.

If you’re not sure where to start, think Kurt Cobain. No seriously, autumn 2023 didn’t bother to update the grunge aesthetic, it just brought it back, as is: ripped jeans, plaid shirts, random layers, baggy cardi and slashed jumpers are all here.

Oversized collars and lapels

House Of Sunny, tapestry brand-embroidered boxy-fit cotton shirt, £130

Collars have become fashion statements this season. For tailoring, it was a story of extreme, with either oversized lapels or no lapels at all.

But collars on everything and anything have somehow gotten bigger and while shapes vary, one thing is for sure: it’s all about the neck.

Statement scarves and beanies

Vivienne Westwood Sporty beanie, £155

Beanies, the beloved accessories of the craft beer drinking inner city dweller, is taking the world of fashion by storm. It’s been everywhere and we can’t complain, after all, your head needs to stay warm when temperature drop.

Statement scarves should keep your neck warm and are an easy way to update your wardrobe for a new season. Oversized is the way to go, and yes, the bigger, the better. We’re still unsure whether Armani’s version is a cape, a blanket, or a scarf…

Knitwear

Burberry Argyle wool sweater, £1,290

Tis the season: knitwear is a must, whether you follow fashion trends or not.

From loose jumpers to cardigans, everyone features knitwear, and again, it’s big. Chunky knits dominated, with an emphasis on cosiness and a leisurewear vibe.

This is one of the easiest trends to follow. What else do we want to wear when it gets colder? We’re starting to think knitwear, appearing every season, isn’t so much a trend as a necessity.

Colour of the season…

Purple in all its shades, from burgundy to pastel, as seen at Louis Vuitton, Dior, JW Anderson, Emporio Armani, Fendi, Dries Van Noten, Kiko Kostadinov…
